In the Beginning i worked mainly as a crane assistant swinging my way through The Muppets, Let’s Rock and Judith De Paul’s complete cycle of Gilbert and Sullivan operas-all fourteen of them. Over the next thirty years lighting for camera and cameraman i worked on a wide variety of television programming from sport (five years Wimbledon centre court), Politics (ITN news and Channel 4’s A Week in Politics), comedy (Chaiman Alf, Last Resort, Max Head room and Reeves and Mortimer), Studio dramas (Countdown to War with Ian McKellen as Adolf Hitler), pop concerts and documentaries in China, India and Cambodia among many others.
A large part of my work has been recording stage productions including twenty live broadcasts on Channel 4 goes to Glyndebourne. Over sixty Operas and Ballets from the Royal Opera House Covent Garden with many broadcasts to television and cinema. Senior cameraman on the first NTlive broadcast live to cinemas. A further seventeen as a cameraman. Senior cameraman on the first 3D Ballet broadcast live to cinemas. Swan Lake from the Maryinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. Over fifty classical concerts for the BBC including The Proms, Choir of the year and Leeds Piano competition. Over one hundred theatrical recordings for the Theatre Museum/V&A video archive.
In 2013 Producer John Wyver of Illuminations Media asked me to work with him as associate producer for the RSC in bringing Greg Doran’s vision of broadcasting William Shakespeare’s complete first folio, all 36 plays, live to cinemas.
