Associate Producer, Illuminations Media: Phyllida Lloyd’s Shakespeare Trilogy 2017

Introduction

The Donmar Warehouse/Phyllida Lloyd Shakespeare trilogy was described by the Observer as ‘one of the most important theatrical events of the last twenty years’. The three plays, Julius Caesar, Henry IV and The Tempest were performed in the round at the Kings Cross Theatre.  We recorded the six hours over two weekends in late 2016.

I was responsible for  the multi camera recording of the three plays  and correction to the theatre lighting for television.

When John Wyver first introduced me to Phyllida Lloyd  i was expected  to observe two important considerations. The camera must  always be on the eye line and we must not see cameras. For a production performed in the round with banked seating on four sides framing the stage area. This was a problem i had no immediate answer to. After much thought we took a calculated risk and decided to film in one direction the first weekend and  in the complete opposite direction the second weekend. Merging the two recordings in the edit. I doubt whether many could see the join.

The first part of the trilogy was an official selection at the Edinburgh Festival and nominee for the Michael Powell award. The further two parts Henry IV and the Tempest will be available later in the year. The full trilogy will be streamed to the Space sometime in 2018.
